When you purchase a nebulizer system, parents should find out the details of the warranty and coverage for specific parts and accessories. Warranties and replacements may differ according to manufacturer. Both new and experienced nebulizer users alike may have some confusion as to the best way to maintain their nebulizer equipment.
Tubing
Various nebulizer systems may have specific recommendations, but in general, the tubing should be replaced if it has become dirty, moist, discolored, kinked or has developed leaks or holes. Many nebulizer sets come with replacement tubing and it is recommended that these be replaced about every 6 months. There is no need to clean nebulizer tubing because only filtered air passes through it. If tubing gets wet, it must be replaced.
Mask
Most face masks are made to last 18-24 months before needing to be replaced, in part or as a whole. Regular mask cleaning can increase the life of your nebulizer face mask. Facial oils left on the cushion of face mask can cause a quicker breakdown. Cleaning the cushion and components of the mask after each use can increase its effective usage time.
Filter
The air filter on the compressor gets dirty over time and should be changed at least every 6 months, more often if a member of the household smokes. Waiting too long reduces the efficiency of the nebulizer and compromises the air quality moving through the filter.
Compressor
Over time the unit’s compressor will weaken, three to five years minimum, depending on the amount of use and the care given. Major insurance plans will replacement nebulizer systems if, the primary care physician confirms that the patient has been compliant with the nebulizer and anticipates the need for continued use and if the warranty has expired.
